About the game

A father, a son,
and a secret Cay

Swam Off Strong is the story of Clint, one of the most legendary fly fishermen the Keys have ever known, and Finn, his son, who is finally old enough to take the rod. Out on Scallops Cay, a private, secluded island that has been in the family for generations, Clint is going to teach him everything: how to find these incredible fish, how to fool them, how to let them go, and how to take care of the place that makes it all possible.

  • Clint, in his bucket hat and sunglasses.

    Clint

Dad · fly tier · legend

Bucket hat, sunglasses, mustache, a striped shirt that's older than Finn. Speaks softly on the water, ties flies at the end of the dock, and will pull the outboard off the transom if he catches you running it over his flat.

  • Finn, with wild blond hair and a big grin.

    Finn

    Son · rookie · you

Wild hair, quick mouth, big heart. Has watched from the deck his whole life and is pretty sure he's got this. You're Finn. Every cast, every refusal and every fish that swims off strong is his to learn from.

The legend

Everybody on the docks knows Clint

Ask around any marina in the Keys and somebody has a Clint story. The permit he fooled on a fly he tied in the dark with a flashlight in his teeth. The tarpon that towed him a mile and a half and still came to the boat. The guides who quietly started fishing where he fished, and never found what he found.

He has been on the bow for a lifetime, and he still talks about bonefish the way other people talk about weather: with respect, and a little suspicion.

The secret

A Cay nobody else knows how to fish

Out past the last channel marker is a little island called Scallops Cay, with a fish shack and a dock. Clint built them with his own father, one board at a time, and every board has a story. Most of them are about the one that got away.

The flats around it are his and his alone. Mangrove keys, a mud flat, a reef edge and a deep cut between the islands, all full of fish that have never seen a fly that wasn't his. He has never brought anyone out here. Until now.

The kid

Finn has watched long enough

Finn grew up on the deck of that skiff, watching. He has heard every story twice and knows exactly where Dad keeps the good sandwiches. What he hasn't done is make the cast himself.

He's quick, a little cocky, and absolutely sure he'll hook the cooler on his first try. Clint is sure of it too. That's fine. You're going to lose a lot of flies.

The lessons

Everything Clint knows, one day at a time

Pole in quiet. Read nervous water. Lead the fish, land the fly soft, and make it the best decision that fish ever makes. Keep the motor off the flat, because this is their home. Be back at the dock by sunset. No exceptions. No "one more cast."

While Finn fishes, Clint ties flies at the end of the dock and keeps the Field Notes: a hand-drawn book of everything Finn sees out there. His Fishy Bible. Don't get sandwich on it.

Conservation

Leave it better than you found it

Clint found something beautiful out here. A healthy flat, full of bonefish, permit and tarpon, is one of the rarest things left in the world. He isn't just teaching Finn to catch fish. He's handing it down, so it's still here for Finn's kids. That's stewardship, and it's at the heart of the game.

  • 1

    Catch and release. Always.

The only rule on Scallops Cay that isn't negotiable. Every fish goes back, so it can grow, spawn, and be caught again by the next angler who poles these waters.

  • 2

    Keep 'em wet

Catch, quick photo, release. They're not influencers. Handle them gently, keep them in the water, and get them back fast so they swim off strong.

  • 3

    Motor off the flat

Running an outboard across a flat blows out the fish and leaves prop scars in the seagrass that take years to heal. On the flat, you pole. That's their home.

  • 4

    Leave nothing behind

Lose a fly to a fish, fine. Lose it in the mangroves and you're having a conversation with Clint. Line and flies left behind stay out there for years.

Clint's rules aren't just flavor. The game plays by them: fish that are spooked, chased or run over with the motor don't come back easily, and the flat rewards anglers who treat it with respect.

"The catch is for you. The release is for him."

Inspired by legends

Standing on giant shoulders

Clint is fictional. The kind of angler he is isn't. Swam Off Strong is inspired by the titans of saltwater fly fishing, who taught by example: how to fish with skill and patience, how to share what you know, and how to fight for the water that gave you everything.

  • Flip Pallot

    In memory · 2025

Host of The Walker's Cay Chronicles, which brought saltwater fly fishing into living rooms for fourteen years. Co-founder of Hell's Bay Boatworks and a lifelong voice for the Everglades and Florida's estuaries.

  • José Wejebe

    In memory · 2012

Captain from Summerland Key and host of Spanish Fly, for nearly twenty years the most recognizable face in saltwater fishing on television, and a guide who made the Keys feel like home to anglers who had never been.

  • Bob Popovics

    In memory · 2024

Perhaps the most inventive saltwater fly tier there has ever been: the Surf Candy, the Bucktail Deceiver, Pop Fleyes. He gave his ideas away freely and taught a generation of tiers at his own table.

And so many more: the guides, tiers, writers and conservationists who built this sport and protected the places it lives. What they showed us is what the next generation of anglers, outdoorsmen and good people should be like. This game is our thank you.

The name

Why "Swam Off Strong"?

It's what you say when you let a fish go and it kicks away healthy, ready to be caught another day. Clint says it's the best sight on the water. Better than the catch. Every fish in the game is released, and every one is a story Finn gets to bring back to the dock.
